What is a Nasal Mask?

Nasal masks are a type of CPAP mask that provides indirect airflow to the nostrils as you sleep. The mask fits over the bridge of the nose and upper lip, hence being a nasal mask rather than a full-face mask.

This type of CPAP mask is recommended for those that are in need of a higher airflow pressure when dealing with sleep apnea. Nasal masks are typically not as lightweight as other CPAP mask types, such as nasal pillow masks, but are less bulky than full face masks.

Why do I need a CPAP Mask?

CPAP masks are used by individuals that suffer from sleep apnea and require support when sleeping. Sleep apnea occurs when an individual stops breathing for 10 seconds or more during the night. This condition can occur from sinus issues, a deviated septum or other nasal passage problems that disallow proper breathing to take place while asleep.

CPAP therapy is usually in the form of a machine and fitted mask that aids regular breathing patterns. A CPAP Mask can come in a variety of styles and types to suit each individual's needs and requirements for proper breathing as well as comfort.

For example, nasal masks are beneficial for restless sleepers who require a lightweight design with direct airflow to aid breathing. This mask is great for those that may experience claustrophobia as it does not encompass the entire face. However, it may cause nose irritation if you are prone to allergies.

Advantages of Nasal Masks

At CPAP Direct, we understand that sleep apnea and CPAP therapy are different for each individual, which is why we aim to offer a variety of mask types, brands and styles.

There are many advantages to choosing a nasal mask over a nasal pillow mask or full-face mask. Nasal masks are a great option for individuals that need a more lightweight style that still maintains a high airflow pressure throughout the night.

Nasal masks are a great option if you:

  • Sleep with your mouth closed during the night
  • Toss and turn in your sleep
  • Are looking for a mask that is lightweight and non-obtrusive

Pros & Cons

There are many pros and cons to the CPAP Nasal Mask, as each CPAP therapy journey is an individual process. Here are the pros and cons of nasal masks:

Pros

  • Comes in a variety of different styles
  • Allows you to move around while you sleep
  • Indirect pressure and a more natural airflow

Cons

  • You must keep your mouth closed while wearing the mask
  • The straps can cause irritation for some people
  • It may not be suitable for people with allergies

Alternatives to Nasal Masks

The two main alternatives to nasal masks are nasal pillow masks and full face masks. Both of these alternatives should be taken into consideration when choosing the right mask for you, as each mask is suitable for different face shapes and CPAP therapy needs.

While the nasal mask is a great option for individuals who require high pressure but a lightweight style, some may find that this mask type does not suit their needs.

Nasal Pillow Masks

Nasal pillow masks are designed to feel more natural as you sleep. As the most lightweight mask type, the nasal pillow mask allows for lots of movement during sleep and gives you the freedom to sleep in any position.

This design goes mainly across the upper lip and underside of the nose, with support reaching across the cheeks around to the back of the head.

Full Face Masks

Full face masks are designed to treat obstructive sleep apnea and are more bulky and heavy in design. These masks allow you to breathe comfortably through a fitted device and ensure that you are fully supported across the cheeks and head for a good night's sleep.

Support Products

We have many products that can help support CPAP therapy and increase your comfort throughout the night.

Given that nasal masks require you to keep your mouth closed during your sleep, it may be helpful to use a mouth strip to make sure you are getting the most out of your mask.

Other support accessories include memory foam pillows, cleaning products, and extra parts or components that may need regular replacement, such as tubes, headgear and filters.
