What Should I Do Now?
Even though OSA is less likely in your case, it's still essential to stay informed and proactive about your sleep health. If you are struggling with tiredness, poor sleep, or loud snoring, the first step is to look at the foundations of healthy sleep. Small changes can make a big difference to how rested and refreshed you feel.
Start with Your Sleep Habits and Environment
Listen to your body.
When you feel that familiar wave of tiredness at night, that is your body telling you it is ready for sleep. Try not to push past it, or you risk missing your natural sleep window.
Stay consistent.
Aim to go to bed and wake up at the same time every day, including weekends. A steady routine helps your body fall asleep more easily and supports deeper, more restorative rest.
Eat earlier.
Finish dinner at least two hours before bed so your body is not digesting when you are trying to unwind.
Limit alcohol, caffeine and screens at night.
These can make it harder to fall asleep and stay asleep.
Set up a restful space.
Make sure your bedroom is cool, dark and quiet. A calm environment tells your brain it is time to power down.
If you've nailed the steps above and are still not feeling better during the day, we recommend having a chat with your GP about the next steps. They may refer you to a sleep physician or recommend you still have a sleep study. If this is the case, contact us at info@sleeptestingaustralia.com.au or on 1300 559 583. We will be glad to help facilitate this for you at any one of our many locations.
Understanding the Risks of Untreated Obstructive Sleep Apnea
Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) is more than just loud snoring. It is a serious medical condition where your airway repeatedly collapses during sleep, causing drops in oxygen and fragmented rest. When left untreated, OSA can significantly affect your health and daily life.
People with untreated OSA are at increased risk for:
Heart disease
Higher chances of high blood pressure, irregular heartbeats and heart attacks.
Stroke
One of the strongest known sleep-related risk factors.
Type 2 diabetes
Sleep disruption affects the body’s ability to regulate blood sugar.
Daytime fatigue and accidents
Poor concentration and microsleeps increase the likelihood of workplace and road accidents.
Mental health issues
Higher rates of anxiety, depression, irritability and cognitive decline.
The urgency to diagnose and treat OSA cannot be overstated. Early intervention can protect your health, restore your energy and significantly improve your quality of life.

FAQs
Q: How do I know if I have sleep apnea?
A: Common symptoms include loud snoring, choking or gasping during sleep, and excessive daytime sleepiness. The best way to know for sure is to undergo a sleep study. Check out our blog on Why Sleep is Important and what can negatively affect your sleep.
Q: Is CPAP therapy uncomfortable?
A: Modern CPAP machines are designed to be as comfortable and quiet as possible. The technology has come a long way, and our team of experienced CPAP clincians can help you find the right mask and machine settings for your comfort. We have no-obligation trials available so you can test the CPAP machine and mask to see if it's right for you before committing to purchase.
Q: Can I manage OSA without a CPAP machine?
A: Yes, there are alternatives available such as a MAS (Mandibular Advancement Splints) and/or anti-snoring devices. Lifestyle changes may also help manage OSA, however the effectiveness of these options can vary, therefore it’s best to consult with your healthcare provider.
Q: How long does a sleep study take?
A: An in-home sleep study typically requires one overnight study in the comfort of your own home. You will need to book in at one of our CPAP Direct locations for our Sleep Technician to set you up with the equipment and to guide you through the process (this appointment takes approx. 30 minutes). The sleep study equipment will need to be returned to clinic the next day. Results are usually available within 2-3 weeks once a board certified Sleep & Thoracic Physician reviews your data. You will be notified by our team once your results are available.
Q: How much does a sleep study cost?
A: With a referral from a GP, you may qualify for a Medicare funded sleep study. If so, your out of pocket expense could be as little as $49 (Bulk billing available for pensioners and concession card holders who meet Medicare criteria). Private funded studies and OSA Screening Tests are also available. Contact our team to discuss which one may be right for you.
Q: Can I claim with my Private Health Insurance?
A: Each health fund offers slightly different cover so we recommend checking with your fund directly to see what you are entitled to claim. CPAP Equipment may be covered by your policy and in some cases you can receive up to $500 back after purchasing your machine. Most health funds require a copy of your Sleep Study Report to claim a rebate, as each fund has their own conditions it is best to contact them first.
OSA is a very common, yet serious sleep disorder and in your case, should be further investigated as to how the condition is affecting you. If left untreated, you may be at a higher risk of stroke or heart attack. The good news is that treatment options could help you feel better instantly and improve your quality of life!
For an accurate diagnosis and to find answers about some of the symptoms you are experiencing, the next step is to have an in-home sleep study. In most cases, you'll need a referral for this study, which can easily be obtained through a brief telehealth consult with an Australian GP. For just $23.99*, you can speak with a registered doctor at a time that suits you, all from the comfort of your home or on the go with your mobile device
