Travelling with CPAP: A Comprehensive Guide

Travelling with a CPAP doesn’t have to be complicated. From airport security to campfire nights, CPAP users now have a range of tools, batteries, and travel-friendly machines designed to make therapy possible anytime, anywhere. It may seem like a lot to take in, but we’ve got tips and tricks to keep your CPAP running smoothly so you can focus on enjoying the journey. Ready to explore the world and sleep soundly doing it? Let’s dive in!

Power Solutions on the Go

Power availability varies depending on where you’re headed, so planning your power setup can make or break your trip.

Backup Power

Investing in a reliable alternate power supply ensures your therapy never skips a beat, whether you're travelling, camping, or facing an unexpected power outage. Options like portable CPAP batteries (such as the Medistrom Pilot-24 Lite or SmartMed AirPro Mini), DC/DC converters, car adapters, and 300W pure sine wave inverters give you the flexibility to power your device for up to two nights (sometimes more!) and many of these can be recharged through wall outlets, USB ports, or even solar panels—perfect for adventures or peace of mind at home.

PLEASE NOTE: Humidification and heated tubes are power suckers and will need to be turned off when using alternate power supplies that will significantly reduce battery run time and we highly recommend turning them off to make sure they will make it through the night.

CPAP Use in Hotels, Cruise Ships, and Camping

Hotels and Cruises

These days sticking with your CPAP routine is simple when it comes it cruising the open seas or those hotel getaways, but a little extra planning can never go awry:

  • Plug Placement: Ever notice how hotel outlets are never where you need them? Or how cruise ship outlets love to hide on the opposite side of the room from the bed? Remember to pack an extension cord so you can get some sleep without having to go on the hunt for a nearby plug.
  • Water Supply: Don’t lug around distilled water—most cruise lines will provide it for you if you ask in advance. Just let them know before you board!
  • Easy Cleaning: Keeping your CPAP clean while travelling doesn’t have to be a chore. Toss some CPAP mask wipes in your bag for quick and hassle-free maintenance.

Camping and Road Trips

Taking a holiday further off the beaten path? Your CPAP can come along for the adventure:

With a little prep, your CPAP can tag along on any trip, keeping you well-rested and ready to enjoy every moment of your adventure!

Preparing for Air Travel with Your CPAP

Heading abroad? Most modern CPAP machines are dual-voltage (100-240V AC), but it’s always wise to double-check. Don’t forget to pack a plug adapter for your destination’s outlet style, and if you’re unsure, reach out to us—we’ll make sure you’re travel-ready!

Packing some spare filters, mask cushions, and tubing is great as well, for those "just in case" moments. Nothing derails a relaxing getaway faster than scrambling to fix your CPAP setup.

Make sure your CPAP machine is packed safely in its protective case and always bring it as carry-on luggage. Checked bags face rapid pressure changes and extreme temperature swings (not to mention the occasional rough handling) and none of which are friendly to the sensitive components of your machine. The good news? Most airlines don’t count medical devices like CPAPs toward your carry-on limits, so you can keep it close without sacrificing your other essentials.

And here’s a pro tip: You can attach a medical equipment tag to the bag for smoother security checks and be ready to place your CPAP in a separate bin when going through security, as some international airports may be required to inspect the device.

Major Australian Airlines and Their CPAP Policies

Qantas
Flying with Qantas? While you don’t need medical clearance from a doctor, you will need to complete the CPAP Travel Clearance Form before your flight if you want to use it onboard. For domestic flights within Australia and New Zealand, you will need a battery if using the device on board, unless an in-seat power outlet is available. All batteries must be non-spillable and contain less than 160Wh of charge for safe travel.

Jetstar
Be sure to reach out to Jetstar ahead of time, as they sometimes require you to complete a CPAP Clearance Form before your trip. Your CPAP must travel as carry-on luggage, so keep it close. If you're flying on a Jetstar Asia aircraft, remember that plug-in medical devices aren’t permitted onboard and you will need to power your CPAP with a battery if you are planning to use it while on board.

Virgin Australia
Virgin Australia allows CPAP machines as part of your carry-on baggage allowance. If you want to use your CPAP in-flight, notify the airline at least 48 hours in advance. As with Jetstar, only battery-operated CPAP devices can be used onboard.

NOTE: This is intended as a guide only and for the most up-to-date information and specific requirements, it is always best to visit the airlines’ websites directly.
