We talk about it all the time on Healthy Living — how quality sleep is crucial for daily functioning and long-term health, and why sleep apnea is a problem we need to address.

Today we’re going deeper into what actually happens during sleep and how we can give ourselves the best chance of a restorative night. Joining me is Bryce Perron, CEO and founder of CPAP Direct.

Bryce, as the founder of CPAP Direct you’re clearly passionate about sleep apnea treatment. Where does that passion come from, and what’s your experience?

Bryce Perron:
I’m passionate about it because I have sleep apnea myself.

I was diagnosed about twenty years ago while living in Perth. My wife (then my partner) told me, “You need to do something about that snoring or we’re not getting married.” That experience is common in our sleep clinics — many people arrive under protest because their partner insisted they get it sorted.

I was also constantly tired. After lunch on the road I’d pull into a car park, put the seat back and nap just to recharge. A sleep study showed I was stopping breathing 28 times an hour. I’ve used a CPAP machine ever since and it was a complete game-changer.

Through the business we work closely with sleep physicians and respiratory specialists. I’ve studied the neuroscience behind sleep, so everything I share comes from research and lived experience — not medical advice.

You’ve looked closely at sleep science. What actually happens in the brain when we sleep?

Bryce:
During sleep the brain cycles through 90-minute stages across an eight-hour night. These fall into two main types: non-REM and REM sleep.

Most non-REM sleep occurs in the first four hours. This is when the brain transfers short-term memories from the hippocampus into long-term storage in the cortex, freeing up capacity for new learning the next day. Non-REM sleep also flushes plaques and toxins from the brain, releases human growth hormone for muscle and cell repair, and regenerates the immune system.

The second half of the night is richer in REM sleep — dream sleep. REM supports emotional regulation, helps the brain connect new information, improves problem-solving and boosts creativity.

In short, quality sleep drives recovery, repair, memory consolidation and energy reset for the next day.

Memory, creativity, immune function, tissue repair — the list of benefits is long. How can someone tell if they might have sleep apnea?

Bryce:
A clear red flag is waking up tired despite getting a full eight hours of what feels like uninterrupted sleep. If you can’t clear sleep pressure no matter how long you rest, something is interfering with recovery.

Sleep pressure is the gradual build-up of adenosine in the brain from the moment you wake. Adenosine creates the drive to sleep. At night, rising melatonin combined with high adenosine should trigger deep, restorative sleep.

When sleep is disrupted — as it is with untreated sleep apnea — residual adenosine remains. People then reach for coffee, because caffeine blocks adenosine receptors. Once the caffeine wears off, the accumulated sleep pressure hits harder, creating the classic afternoon crash.

So the first step is optimising the basics of good sleep. What practical tips do you recommend?

Bryce:
Be consistent with bedtime and wake time — even on weekends. The circadian rhythm thrives on routine. Melatonin typically rises around 8–9 pm for most people, signalling it’s time to sleep. A cool, completely dark room supports that process.

Avoid caffeine for up to twelve hours before bed, and limit alcohol. While alcohol can feel sedating, it fragments REM sleep and reduces overall sleep quality.
